Converting CSV to JSON is one of the most common data-wrangling tasks in modern development, and there are enough edge cases to trip up a naive implementation.

CSV Structure Basics

A CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file has two parts:

  1. Header row (optional but strongly recommended): column names
  2. Data rows: one record per line, values separated by a delimiter
id,name,email,age,active

3,Charlie,charlie@example.com,35,true

Converted to JSON array:

Note that all values are strings by default. Type inference (converting "30" to 30) is optional and depends on your tool.

Common Conversion Scenarios

Basic Flat Conversion

The simplest case: a header row maps directly to JSON keys.

Type-Coerced Conversion

For API use, you usually want numbers as numbers and booleans as booleans:

Most converters (including ZeroTool) offer a “parse types” option for this.

Quoted Fields with Commas

CSV handles commas inside values by quoting:

city,description
New York,"Large city, financial hub"
London,"Historic city, capital of UK"

Correct JSON output:

A naive string-split on commas will break this. Always use a proper CSV parser.

Embedded Newlines

Values can span multiple lines when quoted:

id,notes
1,"First line
Second line"
2,"Single line"

This is valid CSV but requires a parser that handles multi-line fields.

Tab-Separated Values (TSV)

Some exports use tabs instead of commas:

Bob	82	B

Specify the delimiter when converting — most tools support custom delimiters.

Handling Edge Cases

Missing Values

id,name,email

Missing values can become "" (empty string) or null depending on the tool:

No Header Row

When the CSV has no header, you can either:

  • Auto-generate column names: col1, col2, col3
  • Provide column names manually before converting

Duplicate Column Names

value,value,value
1,2,3

Behavior varies: some converters suffix duplicates (value, value_1, value_2), others overwrite. Deduplicate your headers before converting.

Sometimes you need to go the other way — flatten a JSON array to CSV for analysis in Excel or Google Sheets.

Nested objects are the challenge:

Performance Considerations

For large CSV files (millions of rows):

  • Streaming: process row-by-row rather than loading the whole file into memory
  • NDJSON output: newline-delimited JSON (one JSON object per line) is easier to stream than a single large array
  • Type inference overhead: auto-detecting types on every cell adds CPU cost; disable it for known schemas
